Sometimes I Want an Escape – Surviving the Drug Epidemic

Surviving as a Teen

Discussion, Part 9

Open: Have you or someone you know struggled with drug addiction?  What was it like?

Discussion

  • Why do you think people are drawn to drugs?
  • What might teens be trying to escape from when they use drugs?
  • What about drugs makes people think they’ll finally be happy if they use them?
  • Do drugs really help people become joyful?
  • How real is the supernatural world?
  • What people from the Bible had some crazy supernatural experiences, without the use of drugs?
  • How is using drugs similar to practicing witchcraft?
  • If certain drugs were legalized, would that make it any more right to use them?
  • How can you tell if someone is addicted to a drug?
  • How does developing your relationship with God help you not give in to the temptation to use drugs?
  • When in your life do you think it’ll be hardest to resist the temptation to use drugs?  Will it get easier as you get older?
  • If someone has become addicted to drugs, is there any way for them to be free?

Cross-References: Psalm 116:3-6, Acts 17:6, Proverbs 31:4-7, Numbers 22, 1 Corinthians 6:20, Proverbs 24:21

Reflect:

  • Have you ever done something wrong for no other reason than you wanted to enjoy the excitement of rebellion?
  • Have you ever done something you knew was wrong just because everybody else was doing it?
  • How can you guard against peer pressure to do drugs?
  • Since your body is a temple, do you need to change the way you’re doing things?
  • What’s your plan to make sure you don’t give in to using drugs?

Prayer:

  • Pray that everyone present would be strong and resist the pressure to start using drugs.
  • If anyone in the group has become addicted to drugs, pray for them to be set free and walking victoriously.
  • Take some time to pray for friends who are getting involved with drugs.  Ask that God would supernaturally intervene to set them free.
