Hulk Smash! – Surviving Teen Angst

Surviving as a Teen

Discussion, Part 5

Open: What is teen angst?

Discussion

  • Is “teen angst” unavoidable?
  • Is anger ever a good thing?  Can you think of a time when it might be appropriate?
  • Have you ever been overcome by zeal for something?
  • Why do you think God hates rebellion so much?
  • How can you be angry but still submissive about it?
  • Describe how mercy could triumph over judgment.
  • Why do you think hypocrisy bothers God so much?
  • What happens when somebody wrongs you and you refuse to forgive them?
  • What does it look like to live at peace?  Does it mean you never get angry?

Cross-References: Proverbs 12:16, Ecclesiastes 5:3, John 5:1-21, Romans 8:9

Reflect:

  • Do you need to adjust the way your doing things, to make sure you don’t sin in your anger?
  • How can you be resolute and steadfast without being stubborn?
  • Have you ever had a time where you were so mad about something, and then later you realized you had nothing to be angry about?
  • How can you make sure you are slow to anger the next time you want to get really mad about something?
  • How in control of your tongue would you say you are?
  • Have you let God renew you, or are you not totally giving in to Him?

Prayer:

  • Take some time and ask God if you are bitter at anyone and need to forgive them.  As he brings people to your memory, just tell Him you forgive them, no matter what they may have done to you.
  • Ask God if you need to repent for sinful anger.  If you’ve been rebellious, stubborn, harsh, mistaken, hypocritical, or bitter in your anger, just repent and let God cleanse you.
  • Pray for each other, that you would be slow to anger, at peace with people, quiet when you need to be, and renewed.

Memory Verse: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. – Romans 12:2
