Sometimes I Feel Bad – Surviving Depression

Surviving as a Teen

Discussion, Part 3

Open: Why do you think people get depressed?

Discussion

  • Describe how a person gets depressed?  What happens?
  • Why does it matter that God is love?  Does that really help you at all?
  • What sorts of things could a king do for someone he loves who is hurting?
  • If God is faithful, why doesn’t He move as quickly as we want Him to sometimes?
  • Do you tend to think of God as joyful?  Why or why not?
  • Is repenting of a sin a key to surviving depression?
  • What sorts of thoughts might you have to take captive, to keep from succumbing to depression?
  • What did Jesus mean when He told us to remain in Him?
  • When is it hard to keep hoping for something?

Cross-References: Psalm 18:6, Psalm 30:1, Matthew 12:21, Romans 15:13

Reflect:

  • Is it wrong to feel depressed?
  • Are you a type of person to get depressed easily?  Or do you find it relatively easy to be joyful most of the time?
  • Uncorrected sin can lead to depression.  Have you ever noticed this in your own life?
  • How can you make sure you remain in Jesus?  What things can you do?

Prayer:

  • Spend some time asking God if there are any uncorrected sins in your own life that you need to repent for and handle correctly.
  • Pray for anybody in the group who is struggling with depression, and ask God to help them through it.
  • Pray for friends or family members who are depressed.

Memory Verse: In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. – Psalm 118:5
